Background to the project
Laos has recorded high economic growth in recent years and reduced the poverty rate in the country. However, the Bokeo region in the north of the country is still heavily characterised by poverty. Most of the villages are located in mountainous regions and are difficult to reach. There are only a few roads and income opportunities are limited.
Many people in Bokeo live from rice cultivation. A lack of diversification in agriculture and a low awareness of a balanced diet mean that malnutrition and undernourishment are very common in the country. Increasingly frequent periods of drought also lead to water shortages and have a negative impact on rice cultivation. When food supplies are insufficient, many families borrow rice from so-called rice banks. Although this covers their immediate needs, the high interest rates mean that families quickly fall into a cycle of poverty.
Aim of the project
With this project, we are helping 16 communities in the remote Bokeo region to cope with the effects of climate change, adapt their agriculture and secure their livelihoods. Innovative and locally adapted strategies in agriculture are intended to improve not only food security but also the income of families. At the same time, we are contributing to the conservation of forests and the sustainable use of natural resources. In total, 1,150 women, 1,000 men and 600 girls and boys benefit from training, education on climate change and improved access to water.
